This forest division is surrounded by Aurangabad Forest Division in North,Gaya Forest Division in North east, Chatra Forest Division in East ,Palamu Tiger reserve in South west,Garhwa south and North division in West,Latehar Forest Division in south.
The Forest is full of tree species such as Sal(Shorearobusta),Sidha(Lagerstroemia parviflora), Teak(Tectona grandis) ,Khair(Acacia catechu) Bamboo etc.
The terrain is generally hilly with trees along the Koel and the Sone river in the Western & South West portion of the division. These plains stretch along the valley of other rivers, almost isolating the various hill ranges which travel from the southern portion of Palamau and western portion of Hazaribagh districts and come to an end in this division except some small outcrops entering Gaya district. The highest peak in this division is the Manatupahar (2203’) near Manatu villages. There are several other smaller peaks of varying height from 1200’ to 2100’.
Except for the Koel and the Sone, all these are seasonal rivers and remain dry in the summer. Even in the Koel the flow is confined to one two very narrow channels during the hot months. They are shallow and their beds are full of sand brought down from their water sheds due to severe erosion.
This division falls on the leeward side of Ranchi and Hazaribagh Plateau. Hence the rainfall is slightly affected. Rainfall is heavier in the Southern side of the Division because of higher hills, better and more extensive forests.
