Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Wildlife & Chief Wildlife Warden

The Wildlife wing of the department, headed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Wildlife & Chief Wildlife Warden (PCCF-WL & CWLW) is responsible for the overall protection, management and conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitats in the state of Jharkhand.

The Wildlife wing not only looks after the conservation and development of wildlife but also conducts several research programmes related to wildlife. Significant of them are study on flag-ship species, carrying capacity of PAs and man- Animal conflicts with focus on man-elephant conflict. Modern techniques have been introduced for estimation of wildlife population. Periodic wildlife census is carried out to ascertain the trend of its growth. Accordingly, conservation and developmental measures are adopted. Several wildlife projects and action plans have been prepared by MoEF&CC, GoI for better conservation of wildlife which provide appropriate guidance and line of action to be implemented in the field.

About the protected areas network

The state of Jharkhand is blessed with immense diversity of flora and fauna, coexisting with the human communities. The protected area network of the state includes one national park, eleven wildlife sanctuaries, one tiger eeserve and one elephant reserve. 

SANCUARY NATIONAL PARK 2022

Besides the national park, wildlife sanctuaries and tiger and elephant reserves, there are several biological parks both in public and private sectors. The most famous among them are Bhagwan Birsa biological park, Ormanjhi, Ranchi and Bhagwan Birsa mrig vihar, Kalamati, Ranchi both run by State Forest Department.

Protected area network in Jharkhand covers 2.7% of geographical area of the state & 9.1% of its recorded forest area.

Note :- Udhwa lake bird sanctuary has recently been transferred to Sahebganj Forest Division vide Notification no. 3026 dated 22.10.2021 of Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change Government of India due to administrative reasons.
