Ramgarh forest division is one of the 31 Territorial Forest Division. It was created in 2004 after its separation from Hazaribagh East Territorial Forest Division. The notified forest area in Ramgarh is 503.97 Km2. The territorial jurisdiction of this division covers all 6 blocks of Ramgarh district and 2 blocks of Hazaribagh district. Last Working Plan of the division expired in 2019 and a new Working Plan is being drafted which will be effective from year 2024.
This division has 5 territorial ranges namely Kujju, Mandu, Gola, Ramgarh and Patratu. This division is blessed with natural Sal and Mixed forests, but also face challenges of fragmentation of forest due to mining and ancillary activities. The division is blessed with wildlife like elephant, hyena, barking deer, peacocks etc in dense forest areas. Elephant also migrates away from forest areas and invariably causes loss to agriculture and homes. It is advisable that villagers stay away from herd of elephants as far as possible.
Ramgarh forest division offers extensive views of rolling hills covered with forests, intercepted with coal mines. It has wide potential of tourism. Patratu lake falls in this division and is a tourism hotspot. Similar is the case with Rajrappa temple which is very important religious place. Also, this division have potential of mining tourism. Division is trying to develop few more sites for tourism and developing a nature awareness centre in Ramgarh.
