Investigation on factors responsible for Sal (Shorea robusta) mortality (Consultancy to IFP, Ranchi)
Finding of the project :
- Most of the trees showing top-drying, dieback symptoms
- Sal heartwood borer infestation and Polyporus shoreae infestation.
- The amount of wood dust, less or more, together with the extent of drying of the tree- crown, indicates intensity and stage of Sal borer attach.
- Root exposed in the air due to surface runoff.
- Top-drying trees were reported near the waterlogged area and water drainage area
- Exposed Sal roots probably due to soil erosion by the water.
- Mortality might be due to anthropogenic activity (highway/bridge contraction) colonies, pathways, Farm buildings.
- Termites and fungus attack.
