About Khunti Forest Division

The Khunti Forest Division is a forest administrative unit located in the state of Jharkhand, India. The division lies between 23°17.116” to 22°34.408” North latitude and 84°56.704” to 85°52.413” East longitude.

Khunti Forest Division was constituted as per the Forest and Environment Department order (MS) No: 1/2003-251 dated –17.01.2004 from the Ranchi East Forest Division, Ranchi as Khunti Forest Division, Khunti for the sake of development, conservation and protection of forest & its produce. This forest division was constituted into 05 forest ranges, 15 beats and 63 sub-beats. Jurisdiction of Khunti forest division consists of five Ranges viz. Khunti Range, Jariya Range, Girga Range, Tamar Range and Bundu Range and one overlapping Range Tamar Afforestation Range.

Khunti forest Division falls under Khunti district and four blocks (Bundu, Tamar, Sonahatu, Part Rahe) of Ranchi district. It is located in South Chotanagpur in between Ranchi and west Singhbum. It is bounded by Ranchi district in the north, West Singhbhum in South, Gumla and Simdega in the West and Seraikela and Ranchi in the East. The total area of Khunti forest Division is 478.71 sq K.m. (Tamar Range-19404.18 ha, Bundu Range-7366.54 ha, Khunti Range-8627.92 ha, Jariya Range-6659.93 ha and Girga Range-5812.59 ha).

Distribution and Area


Presently the forest area of Khunti Forest Division is distributed in the following five Forest Ranges:
1. Khunti Range:  This Range has a demarcated forest area of 8627.92 ha. It consists of 3 beats, namely Khunti, Kewra and Murhu, and eighteen sub-beats.
2. Jaria Range: -This Range has a demarcated forest area of 6659.93 ha. It consists of two beats, namely Karra, Lodhma and seven sub-beats.
3. Girga Range:  This Range has a demarcated forest area of 5812.59 ha. It consists of two beats namely Tapkara, Rania and ten sub-beats.
4. Bundu Range:  This Range has a demarcated forest area of 7366.54 ha. It consists of three beats namely Bundu, Taimara, Sonahatu and eleven sub-beats.
5. Tamar Range:  This Range has a demarcated forest area of 19404.18 ha. It consists of five beats namely Jargo, Tamar, Sarjamdih, Sosokuti, Arki and seventeen sub-beats.

Presently the forest area of Khunti Forest Division is distributed in the following five Forest Ranges:
1. Khunti Range:  This Range has a demarcated forest area of 8627.92 ha. It consists of 3 beats, namely Khunti, Kewra and Murhu, and eighteen sub-beats.

Geography:

  Khunti Division is situated between 23°17.116” to 22°34.408” North latitude and 84°56.704” to 85°52.413” East longitude. It is bounded by Ranchi district in the north, West Singhbhum in South, Gumla and Simdega in the West and Seraikela and Ranchi in the East. Topography: Topographically the whole area is hilly, undulating and highly rugged. This continuous stretch of land, dotted with soaring cliffs and profound dales support the forests. The elevations of lofty main hills varying from 1200 M to 140 M above mean sea level. Drainage: Swarn Rekha, Karo, Kanchi, Banai, Koel and Jumar are the dominant rivers in the tract. The general trend of the drainage is to North West. Some of the rivers have sheer deep or rocky gorges in their course which are known for their natural scenes. Dasam fall (150') of Kanchi river near Taimara, Rani fall near Arki and Panchgagh where the Banai River branches out in five different streams generating ubiquitous singing rivulets through the cluster of rocks are the most frequented waterfalls in this division.

 

Climate:

The character and extent of vegetation of a locality are chiefly determined by the climatic conditions experienced in that locality. Altitude also has a more pronounced effect on vegetation.

Summer Season: in present context the summer starts from the mid month of Feb. and it ends in the middle of June. The temperature in this season rises to its maximum and reaches up to 46°C (115°F), the days are very hot in this season. Humidity is very low during this season.
 
Rainy Season: The Rainy Season generally starts from end of the June to the September. Monsoon usually arrives in this tract at the end of June. This season is very good for the crops and beneficial for the farmers because the farmers of the entire region are fully dependent on their agriculture. The famous shower locally called "Hathia" occur during October. The humidity remains very high during this season.

Winter Season: The Winter Season generally starts from the beginning of October till the last of February month. In winter the nights are generally longer than the days. The nights are really very cold during this season because of the heavy fall of dew, the temperature fall up to 5°C (41°F) during nights. The days are pretty warmer than the nights its temperature rises up to 35.5°C (96°F) in the sunshine.

Rainfall:

The tract enjoys rains of South-west monsoon (from June to mid-August). The average rainfall received during the last years is 138 mm The tract also receives a few but good pre-monsoon showers, preceded by thunderstorms, during April – May.
