Investigation on factors responsible for Sal (Shorea robusta) mortality (Consultancy to IFP, Ranchi)

Finding of the project :

  • Most of the trees showing top-drying, dieback symptoms
  • Sal heartwood borer infestation and Polyporus shoreae infestation.
  • The amount of wood dust, less or more, together with the extent of drying of the tree- crown, indicates intensity and stage of Sal borer attach.
  • Root exposed in the air due to surface runoff.
  • Top-drying trees were reported near the waterlogged area and water drainage area
  • Exposed Sal roots probably due to soil erosion by the water.
  • Mortality might be due to anthropogenic activity (highway/bridge contraction) colonies, pathways, Farm buildings.
  • Termites and fungus attack.
