Geography and Climate:

Geographical features:- Geology of South Singhbhum, of which the Chaibasa South Forest Division is a part, is quite complicated. Different workers carried out geological investigations in this area at different times to solve the complications. In course, the earlier findings were modified. In view of the economic importance of the mineral deposits of the area, more investigation is being carried out and more lights is expected to be thrown on the problem. But up till now Dr. J. A. Dunn’s observations and interpretations, which are the modifications of C. Hones’s work, have been widely accepted.

Climate and rainfall :

The climate is typical tropical with three distinct seasons

  • Hot and dry Summer
  • Warm and humid Rainy season and

Winter Period of these three broad seasons is as below :
Winter Season- November to February
Summer Season- March to May
Rainy Season - June to September

Places at lower altitude record quite high temperature during summer. This, sometimes adversely affects the plantations. Hot westerly wind, the LOO’ is experienced all over the tract during the months of mid April to June when the maximum temperature touches to 42-46 degree Celsius on few days. Deaths due to heat strokes are almost an annual feature. However, in the second fortnight of May occasional thunder storms with rains referred as “Mango rains” bring down the rising temperatures and also helps in the germination and establishments of Sal seeds.

Monsoon generally breaks by end of June and continues till the end of September. Pre-monsoon showers during late May or early June are a common feature. A short spell (10 days approx.) of rains in the beginning of October known as Hathia rains is most common which is beneficial to the paddy crop. There is also a short spell of winter rain during December to January. The Winter is generally pleasant except for a short span when the night temperature almost touches the freezing point. The fog is not so common except in the deep valleys. Frost is not so common except in the some remote corners of the forest.

Annual Rainfall     : 1433.50 mm

Temperature    : Max 45.2 & Min 6.90C
