About Deoghar Forest Division


Deoghar Forest Division lies between 83033’ to 87015’ East longitude and 23045’ to 25000’North latitude. Located in the picturesque district of Deoghar in Jharkhand, India. Our division encompasses a total forest area of 239.06 sq.km, the boundary of which is co-terminus with Deoghar District. Total geographical area of the district of Deoghar is 2428.59 Sq.km.
After the new state of Jharkhand came into existence, Jamtara Sub-Division of Dumka District was made a separate district, consequent upon which the Govt. of Jharkhand decided to create Jamtara Forest Division making its boundary co-terminus with Jamtara District.

HISTORY

Established on June 1st, 1952, Deoghar Forest Division has a rich history of forest management and conservation. Over the years, this Division undergone changes to ensure better administration and effective preservation of our diverse ecosystems.
After independence the Dumka Forest Division was split into two parts namely Dumka Division and Deoghar Division. Total forest area of old Deoghar Forest Division was 732.36 sq.km, comprising of 235.96 sq.km. in Deoghar Civil Subdivision and 66.45 sq.km. in Jamtara Civil Subdivision of Santhal Pargana District, and 429.95 sq. km. in Banka Civil Subdivision of Bhagalpur District. Deoghar Forest Division was created on the 1st of June 1952. In the year 1984, Banka Forest Division was carved out from erstwhile Deoghar Forest Division, with an aim to ensure better forest management.

The boundaries of Deoghar Forest Division are characterized by its neighbouring divisions.
North : Banka Forest Division of Bihar in Banka District.
South : Jamtara Forest Division.
East : Dumka Forest Division.
West : Giridih Forest Division.

DIVISION STRUCTURE

Deoghar Forest Division comprises three Forest Ranges, each with its distinct features and responsibilities.
1. The Deoghar Territorial Range- Includes three beats: Koiridih, Mohanpur, and Manigarhi, along with fifteen sub-beats.
2. The Deoghar Soil Conservation Range- consists of Devipur and Khoripanan beats, with eight sub-beats.
3. Madhupur Soil Conservation Range- comprises three beats: Budhai, Madhupur, and Chitra, with fifteen sub-beats.

CONFIGURATION OF THE GROUND

Deoghar, known for its spiritual significance and natural beauty, boasts a gently sloping and rolling topography adorned with low hillocks and small ranges, some of which exhibit abrupt peaks. The hill ranges stretch from the East and North-east to the West and South-west directions, adding to the picturesque landscape. Among the notable peaks in the region are Trikut Pahar, standing tall at 2,470 feet, making it the highest peak in the Deoghar Division, and Phuljori Pahar, reaching an elevation of 2,312 feet. Additional hills in the area include Bitaru Pahar at 1,324 feet, Dharam Pahar at 1,196 feet, and Malui Pahar at 1,078 feet.
The average altitude of the ground level in Deoghar ranges from 250 to 300 feet, contributing to the overall charm of the region. However, the landscape has experienced significant erosion, leading to the formation of gullies and ravines in various areas. The general drainage pattern follows a course from the Northeast to the Southeast. Several rivers traverse the region, including Ajay, Jayanti, and Patro, flowing from the West to the East before eventually joining the Bhagirathi River. It is worth noting that most of the streams in the area remain dry for a considerable part of the year, adding to the unique characteristics of Deoghar's terrain.
